Not a traditional coding class
Words to Worlds is a creative technology course. Students do not start with syntax for its own sake. They start with a world, a player, a problem, and a reason to make logic visible.
Interactive fiction gives students a narrative reason to care about structure, conditions, clues, feedback, and revision. The academic work is serious because the game only works when someone else can understand it.
How it works
The course moves students from play and close reading into authorship, design, testing, and iteration.
Students begin by playing text adventures in teams. Each role sees part of the problem, so progress depends on close reading, clear communication, and shared strategy.
Teams plan rooms, objects, puzzles, clues, and player choices. Their writing has to create atmosphere while giving players enough information to act.
Students test, observe, debug, and improve. When classmates get stuck, the team learns that a puzzle is only clear when a real player can understand it.
Student outcomes
The final artifact is a playable narrative game. The learning shows up in the decisions students make while designing, explaining, testing, and revising it.
Students revise because another player needs their words to work, not because a worksheet says to edit.
Interactive fiction turns conditions, states, rules, and cause-and-effect into something students can see, test, and explain.
Teams map, track, type, discuss, and decide together. No single student has all the information.
Playtesting makes feedback immediate. Students improve their game based on what players actually do.
